CELEBRATING POETRY WRITING CONTEST

Mission & Vision

The purpose of the writing contests at Adventure Bound Books is to encourage creative writing in our local community and beyond by supporting the efforts of aspiring writers.  The contests aims to challenge writers and present them with opportunities to practice skills that could be an integral part in taking their writing pursuits to the next level.  Our inaugural year was 2019 when we offered our adult contest - Adventure Bound Writing Contest - and our youth contest - Creative Kids Writing Contests.  As we moved into our second year, we aimed to grow with purpose, expanding our pool of participants each year as well as our prizes and opportunities for entrants and winners as the contests continue.  We're thrilled to have add to our writing contest calendar in 2020 a poetry contest with support from City of Morganton Main Street!  And as we enter into this third year of writing contests, our Celebrating Poetry contest is growing again!

LOGISTICS AND DETAILS

The Celebrating Poetry Writing Contest is an online poetry contest.  Registration and all submissions for judging must be submitted online.  In-person registrations and submissions are not accepted.  Participants must create a free account with Submittable, the online contest submission platform.

Poems can take any form (examples include, but are not limited to, couplets, free verse, rhymed poetry, sonnets, haiku, narrative) and should address the contest theme.  The theme for the Second Annual Celebrating Poetry Contest is Community.

Individuals wishing to participate will register for the contest, pay the entry fee, and submit their poem at the same time.    The deadline to do so is March 6th, but may be done as soon as the writer has completed his/her/their poem and is ready

to submit it for judging.  Judging will take place March 8th - 29th, so early submission does not grant favor by reviewers.  Therefore, be sure to take your time and submit your best work.

Judges will be individuals from the community who are published poets, writing and English literature educators, librarians, scholars, and community leaders.  Judges will review all submissions for (1) connection to contest theme, (2) technical content (grammar, spelling, punctuation), and (3) overall message conveyed.

MEET THE JUDGES!

Each entry is read, anonymously, by multiple judges who represent a variety of backgrounds and experiences in order to relate to the rich diversity of writers who submit stories to our contests.  Click here to read more about them!

CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER (Also known as Rules & FAQs)

The contest is open to individuals of all ages, but requires consent during registration from a guardian or parent for writers under the age of 18 years old.  Common questions and their answers are below but you may contact the bookstore with any questions that are not answered on the sliding FAQ below.

Do I have to live in the United States?

Yes.  At this time, the contest is currently only open to US residents.

LEGAL STUFF

The Celebrating Poetry Writing Contest is currently only open to residents of the United States. But because it is an online contest, anyone in the US can compete.  Registration and entry fee payment, as well as submissions are managed through Submittable.  Individuals interested in participating in the Contest

will need to set up a free account with Submittable in order to be able to submit their stories for judging.  There are no refunds (unless the contest does not reach the required minimum number of participants).  Writers maintain full rights to

their stories but grant permission to Adventure Bound Books, Redhawk Publications, and Morganton Cultural Arts Commission to display their work, with acknowledgement of the author, in the ways and places outlined above.
